A warm January day on the Bitterroot with Zach and Stan from
False Casts and Flat Tires. Before the day on the water started, we slapped a
Fiberglass Manifesto sticker on Zach's truck. For a while, it seemed like all I could catch were suckers. 4 or 5 of them in a row at one point. Big ones, too - 21 to 22". But, eventually we found the trout. Which was a refreshing change for me from my previous winter experiences on the Bitterroot. We caught our fair share of cutthroat and rainbows. I caught a nice 18 to 19" cutthroat and 16 to 17" rainbow to end the day.
I was a little taken aback about the physical condition of a lot of the upper Bitterroot fish. Seemed like every other fish had some level of eye trauma and/or mis-shaped mouth. It was a little alarming.
I went with a more vintage film look this time around. Admittedly, I was a bit inspired by Instagram. But, you guys don't need to know that. As always,
watch it in HD on vimeo.

Suckers are awesome (but then again, maybe it's been too long since I've actually caught a fish)
Great video (per usual)
cheers
@Brian - no, you're right. It had been a long time since I caught a sucker. When I hooked into five straight, I was a little confused because it was fun. They took line and they took it with ease. The uppity trout fisherman in me poo-poo'ed my catch. But, the fish fisherman thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
thanks for the kind words, per ushe.
That video was awesome. Those suckers are kinda cool looking in their own ugly way. Do you have the LCD backpac for the GoPro yet? I'm hopefully picking it up this weekend.
ivan! sweet video, hands in the river for the underwater release shot looks colder in the winter! and i liked the double release... good work
Ivan,
so i am watching your video on the chum, then I go, "this looks like montana, what a tick I know that good looking guy in the Phillies hat, that Ivan!" Looks like ye have gotten after the fly-fishing, right on mane. I appreciate all your videos they are all class. I am living in Ireland this year and plan on making some videos up of me slangin flies for Atlantic Salmon, I will send ye on the link. Say hello to Elena for me!
cheers,
Rob
I dig the style. great shots. I like the double fisting release. I tell you, sometimes we are in sync. No, not the band insync. Just that we post videos around the same time. I'm posting one tonight. I'm also jealous of your editing software.... I may need to upgrade.
I saw the evidence of why all your fish were missing thier upper maxilla in the video (old spin reel). That's the kind of damage only a treble hook can do. Suckers are the salmon of inland streams for nutrient cycling. Tie sucker egg paterns and fish behind their massive spawns. Long live the largescale and longnose sucker!!
@Dave - i don't have the LCD Backpac yet. On the wishlist though. The suckers are certainly beautiful in their own ugly way.
@travis - it was a little cold. not too bad. It was pretty mild and wasn't that much a pain to get the hands wet, until the end of the day.
@Rob - am I the only good looking man with a phillies hat you know. you obviously are hanging around the wrong people. looks like ireland is going well. I will pass on your greetings to elena. i would say hi for her, but it wouldn't be authentic. it would need more vulgarity.
@d. nash - thanks man. i have noticed the same thing. we have a very similar release schedule. great minds think a like...me thinks so.
@d. nash - if you don't have a mac and are willing to spend money, I have heard good things about Adobe Premiere.
@Mark + Wiz - whatever is causing the upper maxilla damage is a damn shame. Several fish had a great deal of eye trauma as well. Easily the most marked up fish I have caught in Montana.
Long live the suckers.
Very cool... Did I hear you were a "yes" on South Padre? It will be fun...
I do have a mac. As you say, I'll put software on the wish list.
The double release was nice...well done sir, you are the master!
Cheers
I think that your pizza slicer is...well, interesting! Great vid as usual.
