November Rock

Another entry in the Month + Rock series. On my first cast, I broke off the tip of my rod. Second straight trip with a broken rod. If you are counting at home, that is both of my rods. For the rest of the day, I threw awkward casts with a broken rod. It was worth it. Caught some nice Rock Creek browns on streamers and a cuttie on nymphs and streamers. Floating ice made it's presence known throughout the day in the middle stretches of the river. Winter is on it's way. As always, watch the video in HD on vimeo.

Loved the ice in the water during some of the release shots...pretty sweet!

@sanders - yeah, that floating ice was nuts. it was definitely a sign that winter was on it's way in. the things that got me was the ice on the submerged rocks. i had never seen that before.

Tungsten weighted streamers and fly rods, not always such good bed fellows Streamer Man. Not sure what kind of rods you have but I always order up an extra tip section at the first break. They can usually be bought for a small extra cost so you don't have to suffer through a lengthy repair period without a rod.

brian j - it was a bit of strip set/rod set hybrid, i am embarrassed to say.

@mike d - it offers up a good time, but, i agree, the crowds are pretty terrible in the peak of the season.

@gary - true indeed. both times have not been the fault of big streamers, but instead snags in trees. this time around, my first cast got caught in a willow. i tried to free it and snap. that is a great idea. i should order some tips when i get them repaired this winter.

great use of black and white and color. this makes me want to drive to the nearest mountains and search for some trout. Cold water is so refreshing. strong work.

Ivan said...

@d.nash - thanks. i was wondering how the flash of color would go over. i liked the effect it had on the black and white. cold water is getting pretty cold right now.

The submerged ice is anchor ice. It's caused by supercooled water which freezes when it contacts the solid surface of the river substrate. It can kill fish eggs and aquatic live and does so regularly. Just part of life in a mountain stream I guess. It is supercool that you got the anchor ice in the release shot!

Check out Rattlesnake Creek during this next arctic event and you will see more anchor ice than you can imagine!

Ivan said...

@Anon - i've read about anchor ice in the past, but never had the chance to see it. it was very cool. i definitely want to check out rattlesnake creek this weekend.

Watch the Clark Fork and the Bitterroot during a hard winter to really see anchor ice.
